When Bai Qian received her letter from Mo Yuan, she couldn’t be consoled. She rushed up to Kunlun Mountain and cried at the entrance of Mo Yuan’s seclusion cave. Seventeen begged and pleaded with Mo Yuan to come out. She sobbed in front of the cave entrance for days continuously. Seventeen cried for him until she passed out from exhaustion.
Inside the cave, Mo Yuan cried with her. He cried harder and longer than she did. It took every ounce of self-control and cultivation not to go to her.
Seventeen came to Mo Yuan day after day and cried for him at the entrance of his cave. She threatened to kill herself. She cursed at him, yelled at him and told him she hated him. She told Mo Yuan that she would have bodily pleasure with every man she met. She apologized and begged for him to come to her. Seventeen cried outside Mo Yuan’s seclusion cave for a month and a half straight.
During this time, others came to intervene, but Bai Qian stubbornly stood her ground. Not even Zhe Yan, her father the Fox King, or her mother could make her change her mind. They also knew this matter needed to be handled discreetly, since Bai Qian was still officially engaged to Ye Hua. The more they pushed, the more she resisted. All they could do was stand by and watch her helplessly.
The Fox King became so upset that he begged Mo Yuan to come out for the sake of his heartbroken daughter. Mo Yuan and Seventeen both didn’t budge and firmly stood their ground.
Then the Fox King turned to Ye Hua, but before the Fox King even made his request, Ye Hua had decided that he wouldn’t wait any longer. He’d watched Qian Qian from a distance and hoped she would have stopped on her own, but Qian Qian’s own unyielding and stubborn nature was causing herself bodily harm.
When Ye Hua came to take her home, Qian Qian was passed out in front of Mo Yuan’s seclusion cave. She had cried herself to the point of illness. Her body was featherlight from her weight loss. Qian Qian’s body was limp and lifeless when Ye Hua picked her up and carried her away.
It was at that very moment Mo Yuan decided he couldn’t stay away. Seventeen’s tears and her heartbreak were too much for him to endure. Mo Yuan realized he couldn’t let her go. Mo Yuan rushed out of his seclusion cave but he was too late, Ye Hua had already cloud jumped and taken her away.
Two months later when it came time for Ye Hua and Bai Qian to get married, the Fox King insisted on proceeding with the original plans. He wanted nothing more than to see Bai Qian get married to move on from her heartbreak and learn to love again. The Fox King had faith if anyone could make this happen, that person would be his future son-in-law Ye Hua.
Ye Hua and Bai Qian’s wedding was the most spectacular event due to the splendor, extravagance, and excessively lavish dowries. The perfect bride and groom performed all the traditional rites. They fulfilled their roles to perfection. Bai Qian smiled and exuded the look that a happy new bride should have. Many commented on what a perfect couple they were, but many also commented about High God Mo Yuan who wasn’t present for his brother’s wedding.
On the evening of the last day of the wedding, Qian Qian was lead away and waited for Ye Hua in The Hall of Beautiful Youth. She sat with her crimson veil over her head. When Ye Hua came to her, he heard her crying quietly. Now that she was alone, Qian Qian was able to cry.
She wasn’t over her heartbreak from Mo Yuan.
Ye Hua helped her undress. She was like a child and allowed him to dress her for bed and cried herself quietly to sleep. Ye Hua sat beside her, stroked her hair and wondered how long she would grieve the loss of her first love.
Qian Qian barely ate. Ye Hua made sure to serve her the things she loved most. He went to Qing Qiu and had Bai Feng Jiu cook things Qian Qian usually loved. She was listless and slept most of her days. When it was time to be Ye Hua’s new happy Princess Consort, she smiled and acted out her role to perfection. Heavenly Grandfather noted how vibrant Bai Qian looked and asked when she would have Ye Hua’s child. She smiled brightly and promised it would be soon.
Everyone was pleased except Qian Qian and Ye Hua, who suffered silently beside her watching her swallowed up in her heartbreak. Qian Qian still cried herself to sleep every night.
All Ye Hua could do was be there for her.
Ye Hua went to Qian Qian and read to her daily. He read her mortal stories. He told her about funny things that had occurred. Regardless of her lack of response, Ye Hua was constant and never showed that he was also in pain. There were nights when Ye Hua wondered if he did the right thing taking her from Mo Yuan. If Ye Hua knew Qian Qian would be this devastated Ye Hua would have let her stay with Mo Yuan. Ye Hua felt guilty for loving her so selfishly and sometimes regretted not canceling their wedding when he saw her sleep day after day wasting away in her room. Ye Hua heard Qian Qian cry often throughout the day.
One day turned into a week, which turned into a month and eventually transformed into a year.
After the fourth year, Qian Qian started to come around. She ate a little more. Qian Qian slept a little less. Some days she sat on the steps in front of The Hall of Beautiful Youth and soaked in the sun. She still barely spoke and only answered when spoken to first. Ye Hua had continuously read to her every day for four years straight without a single response from her.
Finally, one day while he was reading to her as he always did, she started speaking to Ye Hua again. “I miss the smell of peach blossoms,” Qian Qian said in her most quiet voice.
Ye Hua couldn’t believe his ears. These words were the first time she had spoken to him when they were alone. “Would you like to go to Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms? I’ll take you there,” Ye Hua responded, only to see her close her eyes and sigh. Qian Qian lost in her thoughts of her time with Mo Yuan. Qian Qian cried again, but this time a little less.
Another two years went by in the same manner, but Qian Qian seemed to be getting better little by little every day. She cried a little less. Qian Qian came out of her room a bit more. She sometimes smiled when she saw Ye Hua when he came to read to her. They played chess quietly. Qian Qian occasionally cooed softly when Ye Hua brushed her hair. She sometimes held Ye Hua’s hand when they walked to the lotus ponds. Finally, after six long miserable years, Qian Qian’s heartbreak slowly seemed to fade.
One afternoon, Qian Qian was sitting on the steps in front of The Hall of Beautiful Youth enjoying the sunlight, when she heard digging noises coming from the front of the courtyard. She looked out to see Ye Hua on his knees digging holes and planting peach trees in the courtyard of her palace. Ye Hua had the long sleeves of his black robe pushed up to his elbows. His long hair disheveled around his handsome face. He looked up, saw Qian Qian and smiled. Ye Hua had dirt smudges on his cheeks and forehead, and his hands covered in dirt. The dirt on his graceful hands was starting to cake up from the mixture of soil and water, as he continued to plant a peach tree before he said,
“If you won’t go to the peach trees then the peach trees will come to you,” Ye Hua smiled as he busily planted one tree after the other.
Qian Qian squatted beside Ye Hua and looked at her loving husband. For years, Ye Hua had done everything he could to please her, without a single word of gratitude from her. Qian Qian took a breath and said,
“I love you, Ye Hua.”
