An Endeavor of the Heart…..

As he’d done countless times before, Ye Hua carefully closed and locked the dungeon doors to the place of SuJin’s punishment. The wretched spot he’d visited everyday at the very same time for the last 40,000 years.

He wasn’t a cruel, heartless monster and it took a toll on him to continue with her endless sentence. It was only until SuJin went crazy, then he would take her out of her misery. That’s what Ye Hua promised to himself and he meant it. He would suspend his physical torment of her when she finally lost her mind. Or when the painful, agonizing image of Qian Qian, dying in his arms disappeared but unfortunately, for him, neither results occurred.

Throughout the past 40,000 years, Ye Hua questioned his mental health and sanity daily. Continuously gaining gratification like a sadist from SuJin’s everyday suffering wasn’t rational behavior, and far away from how a cultivated High God should act or behave.

However, try as he may. The wrath and fury in him remained, just like the forever frightful image of seeing Qian Qian after a full week of extreme savage torture. That single life changing, soul shattering experience altered him and it was a moment Ye Hua could never forget or dis-remember. Ten of thousands of long years had passed but the memory was still as vividly clear, precise as the day he stormed into that hellish torturous chamber, and that painful nightmare never went away.

The day of Qian Qian’s rescue, after days of frustration and dead leads. Ye Hua noticed SuJin’s oddness and that instantly caught his attention. She’d heard and was well aware of Qian Qian’s missing but didn’t respond at all. Nothing and that didn’t make any sense.

SuJin should have displayed shock, delight or relieve. Something. Anything. But it was her lack reaction that was suspicious and told Ye Hua one thing. She wasn’t surprised at all because she knew precisely where Qian Qian was, and that single clue led them to set her free.

He and Mo Yuan purposely had a planned fake conversation in front of her maid, Xin Nu. They announced Bai Qian was discovered, pretended to split up to continue their search and rescue but instead, closely watched SuJin’s movement covertly.

She did accurately what Ye Hua had expected and guided them directly to Qian Qian. He believed SuJin was confirming the news of Qian Qian’s discovery and of course, attempting to cover up, hide her tracks. Erasing evidence of her involvement in the devious plot.

All they had to do was merely follow her. To everyone’s shock, disbelief and astonishment, she led, pointed them to the old, abandoned residence once used by the White Goddess Yao Guang. Straight and right at the base of Kunlun Mountain.

They’d boldly hidden her directly under Mo Yuan’s nose and his wrath was explosive. His older twin immediately wanted to shred apart the area, and destroy the entire building but hesitated. Because they were uncertain of Qian Qian’s whereabouts or her physical state, her condition so instead, everyone snuck into the vast fortress in total silence.

The dwelling was spacious and they were unsure of her location, but it was the loud screaming, hysterical laughing that directed them to Qian Qian. Ye Hua instantly recognized the screeching voice and thankfully it was SuJin not Qian Qian.

Ye Hua’s first impressions were too hopeful. He prayed that Qian Qian had somehow freed herself and was in the position to attack SuJin. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and what he saw made him somewhat, no, it made him completely insane.

Qian Qian’s entire face covered in blood and her body was chained, shackled like an animal. Her delicate thin arms and legs, all outstretched, pulled and bound to the four far distanced corners of the room. She was weakly but still hysterically laughing at SuJin. Qian Qian’s gaping eye sockets were empty and there wasn’t enough blood in her body, so the void holes were fully visible.

SuJin who was screaming in anguish with huge, craze filled eyes was holding a sharp blade pointed above and at Qian Qian’s lower abdomen. Ye Hua knew and believed her malicious, murderous intention was most likely to end and finalize both the lives of her and their unborn child.

In a sheer ferocity, Ye Hua yelled aloud in rage. SuJin then saw him dropped the knife, promptly tore Bai Qian’s eyes out of her head and ate them while he watched in terror.

The extreme horror of the disturbing death scene was so traumatic that temporarily immobilized was he, Mo Yuan, Zhe Yan and all those also present from the profound shock. For just a few short seconds nobody there could take a step or move because what they saw.

What they all viewed was Qian Qian hairless. However, the buzzed cut wasn’t even. So she had bald spots and little, tiny parts of short hair patches on where once was her full luxurious lock of beautiful hair. Had she not been wearing her dress, it would have been impossible to know if the ravaged body was her.

Her beautiful face was unrecognizable. Covered in blood and underneath the warm sticky substance, she was bruised and swollen. So her usually ivory hued skin was closer to black then blue. Broken was her nose and burst, pulverized into her face. Her cheeks and jaw also shattered along with most of the bones in her face and her body.

Still dressed in her gown but that was due to the fact 70% of her body burned. So the thin, sheer, silky material stuck fast and were a part of the countless raw, seeping, oozing injuries, wounds and blackened chunks of her charred, scorched body.

Qian Qian’s face and body were indistinguishable. When Ye Hua held her in his arms, the stench of blood, burnt skin covered her natural floral scent. She smelled like death because she was dying.

Still, somehow sightless she recognized him, with her final breaths apologized and took all the blame for everything. Including her tragic end and began to inhale her last breath, but Ye Hua couldn’t lose her again so he stopped, ceased the moment right before her final breath ended.

During this suspended state of time, Zhe Yan miraculously returned all the blood to her heart and body, but Qian Qian was in a death-like unconsciousness, coma and stayed that way for 100 years.

Zhe Yan said she shouldn’t have lived as long as she did, and that the intensity of the brutal torture was the worse he’d ever witnessed in his long life. Not only was Qian Qian drained of her blood entirely but that nearly, no, every single bone in her body and her face was either fractured or cracked. Her organs were but masses, puddles of damaged bodily substance.

Qian Qian didn’t have a single tooth in her swollen mouth. Her face, body covered entirely with either burns injuries or black bruises, and her full neck bruised with distinct ring-like impressions from hands that choked her. They knew this due to the fingerprint marks left behind on her fair skin.

Zhe Yan suspected she’d suffered sexual assault, but strangely that part of her body was unharmed and untouched. But it took him almost a month’s time to heal her and during that time, Qian Qian’s heart stopped several more times and repeatedly revived.

So, anytime Ye Hua felt himself wavering due to his inhumane treatment of SuJin, he remembered how they had ravaged and tortured Qian Qian. How they’d drained and stole all the blood from her and their innocent unborn daughter. In an instant, his guilt, remorse vanished immediately like magic. SiJin’s vile, wicked, evil exploits, activities, deeds warranted, deserved his severe punishment and much more.

Ye Hua was quietly drinking wine lost in the reflections of the past, when he heard A-Li arrive to give his usual daily evening greeting. He was now a strapping 40,500-year-old young man who was a couple of inches taller than him.

He had a significant growth spurt during the last 100 years, and he resembled Qian Qian’s older brother, his uncle Bai Zhen, so precisely they could pass as twins. Their Fox facial features were quite similar but not their bodies.

A-Li was not only the tallest male member of both Ye Hua and Qian Qian’s clan. But also luckily possessed his uncle Mo Yuan’s physical build so he was full, broad, muscular and robust.

From his mother, he inherited Qian Qian’s endless vanity, facial features, confidence, temper, attitude, tendency to wear bright, bold colored clothing and was extremely outspoken. A-Li was his mother’s son.

The women and goddesses that once went mad for Ye Hua, no longer even looked his way or noticed his presence when his handsome son was near. A-Li was now the most coveted, most fancied and most desired male within the immortal world and also Ye Hua’s pride and joy.

“A-Li greets Heavenly Lord,” He spoke and bowed respectfully.

His show was but a production when A-Li slowly pretended to lower himself on bent knees, because he knew Ye Hua would stop him. Instead, before his father said one single word, A-Li relaxed and lounged comfortably with his long legs extended then casually plopped himself to the floor. He laid on his side as he always did when they were alone, and drank all Ye Hua’s wine without permission as usual. A-Li inherited Qian Qian’s genetic drinking ability to consume large measures of wine.

“A-Li, how was your mother today?” Ye Hua’s voice was softer than usual when he asked.

A-Li snorted, spoke and he had a loud voice like Qian Qian, “She was as usual. She drank wine and watched the show. She nibbled, ate a bit and appeared to be in good health. By the way, Father, she mentioned that she saw you and Uncle Mo Yuan today in Ten Miles?”

Ye Hua sighed and explained, “It was an accident and something both your uncle and I will be more warily of so it doesn’t happen again. She came out of nowhere.”

A-Li’s inquisitive tone was engaging when he questioned, “Father, you and Mother are so different. Opposite from one another! How and why did you fall in love with her? She’s different! Did you fall for her looks? I could understand that since she is gorgeous.”

“You haven’t a clue how MANY men I have to scare and threaten to stay away from her!” A-Li smirked then laughed aloud when he saw Ye Hua’s dark gaze narrow jealously.

“Your mother’s unique and quirky personality is her charm, A-Li. But her beauty is still unparalleled and nobody will ever come close to her in that aspect. A-Li, continue to keep ALL the other men away from her.”

Ye Hua instructed and added in his usual soft voice with a small smile, “I almost fell over today. I’m sure your uncle, Mo Yuan, probably cried and drank until he passed out when he returned to Kunlun Mountain. We were both fully astounded and couldn’t believe how different she looked. She’s grown more stunning during our long separation.”

His soft tone changed and became most earnest, pressing as he reminded A-Li, “Stay close to her but not so she becomes suspicious of you. Don’t be fooled or let your guard down. Your mother comes off obtuse, dense but she’s much more highly in-tuned and quicker than you can imagine.”

“Your role is to keep your mother safe since that demon, Xuan Nu, escaped before she died. Until we find that fiend, we must always stay alert, watchful and diligent. Son, do you understand?” Ye Hua nervously cracked his knuckles and sighed with fatigue.

“Yes, Father!” A-Li answered immediately in a tone more fitting of an adult or general. Watching over his mother was a task he took with the utmost care. An endeavor of the heart. A-Li’s heart and something he’d suggested first instead of using undercover officers and soldiers.

Ye Hua pushed the wine entirely towards A-Li and instead, sipped his tea before asking, “A-Li, when was the last time you saw your Heavenly Great-grandfather?”

A-Li suddenly sounded like a whining child when he complained like the teenager he was, “Father, he hates me! You know he becomes profoundly agitated whenever he sees me. He cried, screamed and called me the devil the last time I went to see him! He urinated, hid from me, covered his head with his bedding and didn’t come out for weeks. It’s better for his mental health if I stay away.”

“A-Li, your great-grandfather is ill so don’t take it personally. You must always show empathy and respect.” Ye Hua nagged.

But this was a frequent topic of conversation where he and A-Li never agreed. However, there was truth in the fact that Heavenly Grandfather feared A-Li without cause. No, he was terrified of A-Li and often urinated himself when the youth appeared.

It was a mystery but Heavenly Grandfather went mad and nobody knew why. The old man was healthy one day then suddenly began to show signs of hysteria and insanity.

He suffered from prolonged uncontrollable periods of constant crying, screaming and comatose state. Ye Hua took over the position of Heavenly Lord due to all the other realms concerns and demands. He sent Heavenly Grandfather to the far west, and created an extravagant palace to keep him safe with able servants that cared for his every needs.

Suddenly Ye Hua changed the subject and asked slyly, “Did your mother ask or say anything about seeing me?”

A-Li replied without a second hesitation between taunting laughs, “She called you a stone face and asked if you ever smile or speak. Mother asked about why you and Uncle Mo Yuan both have only one eye but nothing else. I don’t think you made much of a lasting impression on her.”

Ye Hua hid his true disappointment and informally responded, “Good night, son, and remember I’m not interested or have any desires to become a young grandfather. I hope you use precautions while you do what you do with the moral girls you meet.”

A-Li retorted back cheerfully, “Father, I’m merely sampling the sweet milk and have no intentions of buying the cow! Put your concerns aside. By the way, I ran into gramps in Qingqiu. I mean the Fox Emperor. He said hello and asked me to send his regards and greetings. He asked the usual like if you were meeting any women. He advised you get back out there, meet some women and remarry. Gramps said it’s not healthy or natural for a man your youthful age to be celibate.”

“A-Li… Be careful never to run into your mother in Qingqiu, and how much spending money did your grandfather gives you this time?” Ye Hua asked but he was speaking to himself because A-Li was long gone.

The Fox Emperor tended to over spoil and overindulge his favorite grandson, A-Li, senselessly and beyond reason.
