Lullaby part two…..

The water is wide
I can not get o’er
And neither have I wings to fly
Oh go and get me some little boat
And both shall row, my love and I.

Where love is planted, O, there it grows
It buds and blossoms, like some rose
It has a sweet and pleasant smell
No flower on earth, can it excel.

There is a ship sailing on the sea
It’s loaded deep, as deep can be
But not as deep, as in love I am
I know not if I sink or if I swim.

The water is wide
I can not get o’er
And neither have I wings to fly
Oh go and get me some little boat
And both shall row, my love and I.

Not even a single footstep. Bai Qian’s sad and stirring song kept him from taking a step away. Her touching lullaby softly drifted from the Hall of Beautiful Youth, and it trailed just long enough to break his heart.

The tune. The cradle song. Ye Hua recognized it well but never before, had he heard the somber lyrics during all those many nights he slept in her arms most lovingly.

It was during his time of immense and incomparable ecstasy. During his time of self-discovery; the sweetness of first and true love. His most cherished moments of endless pleasure back on Mount Junji, at their place of newly-wedded bliss was where he heard it first. SuSu used to sing it to him while Ye Hua nuzzled into her heavenly, soft, bare breasts after hours of making love passionately.

The fond memories of her holding him and softly cooing as if he were a baby, had the most unexplained stirring effect on him. Because never would Ye Hua have guessed by the soothing chime how melancholy, and haunting was the lyrics. The song Bai Qian now sang to A-Li was a grievous melody, which sadly sounded more like a requiem than a lullaby for a child.

It broke his heart to hear her mournful song. Still, he waited and stood outside even though it was unbearable, because there was another reason why he delayed his departure. With premeditated purpose, Ye Hua lingered outside her door for hours. There was a precise cause he waited and that moment finally presented itself. It was the stillness and eventually, there was silence inside Bai Qian’s chamber.

This quiet period was why Ye Hua remained so patiently. They were both fast asleep. Mother and son and he couldn’t stop himself from sneaking a peek as they slumbered, because he pictured it in his mind over a million times after she left him. Just a glimpse was all he desired and his pause was well worth it.

The image was more endearing than he ever imaged. So precious, so lovable that he found himself chuckling and crying at the same time. It was because they looked so much alike. Bai Qian and A-Li. They both slept in the very same position. Together fast asleep, lying on their stomach side by side with their heads turned to their right. Even their light snoring was in sync and sounded the same.

Curled up were Bai Qian and A-Li’s right hands into a relaxed fist, perhaps three inches above their heads. They mirrored each other with their left arms, comfortable and straight down beside their bodies. Ye Hua’s family. His wife and child both asleep in the place she should have never left three hundred years ago.

It was a compulsion he couldn’t control when Ye Hua reached out and caressed Bai Qian’s unconscious face with his lips. Faintly she stirred before quickly settling back into her most profound state of rest. For the very first time since their re-meeting, in her deepest sleep she looked untroubled, relaxed and even happy. She felt his lips and to his surprise, she smiled, mumbled faintly as what she muttered caused tears to come his eyes.

In her alert state, she was vigilant and controlled everything. Her emotions, thoughts, actions and herself to perfection but in her deepest, most profound sleep, Bai Qian was as vulnerable and exposed like everyone else.

She whispered his name and softly murmured, “Ye Hua… I love you…come to bed.”

Ye Hua’s name. Bai Qian called for him and revealed one of her most hidden secrets. He knew regardless of what she said and without a doubt that she still loved him.

To be continued…..
