Zhe Yan~
In the quiet Fox Den, there was no sound except for the faint noises of bodies shifting in their beds. It was still early in the morning. Zhe Yan tiptoed through the receiving area and made his way to Xiao Wu’s room, his usual first stop. There, he saw Mo Yuan slouched and hunched over, sleeping upright with his head resting on her bed.
The photo depicted a familiar scene, given that he’d been by her side almost constantly since she was rescued. He was refusing to leave her side.
Mo Yuan’s health being subpar caused concern. Zhe Yan also worried about his brother’s poor health. Because Mo Yuan sacrificed a significant portion of his life force to rescue Xiao Wu upon discovering her. His lack of possession was fortunate, as no fungal grass was used for the transfer. However, the life-saving action left him exhausted.
“Mo Yuan, rest. I’ll take over,” Zhe Yan whispered, tapping his brother’s shoulder. Mo Yuan, fatigued, asked, “What time is it?”
It’s 5 am. It’s early and dark outside. How was Xiao Wu last night? Zhe Yan’s caring tone suddenly turned irritated. He was disappointed in Ye Hua. “I thought he was supposed to be with her. He was so insistent on spending time with her, but you’re the one picking up his slack… Again… Still!”
Mo Yuan rolled his shoulders to relieve tension. He cleared his throat and cracked his neck. He defended his younger twin, saying Ye Hua has A-Li and responsibilities as a father. Mo Yuan yawned covertly into his palm. He said Bai Qian is just Ye Hua’s soon-to-be sister-in-law, nothing more. He questioned why Ye Hua should be so involved. He asked, “What do you expect from him?”
“I thought he cared more about her than just being in-laws. They got married during her heavenly trial. But maybe you know better than me. Mo Yuan, why are we keeping her pregnancy a secret from him?”
Zhe Yan was curious. As always, Mo Yuan had his reasons. “Ye Hua is already overwhelmed with the trial. I don’t want him to feel more guilt for her condition. And if he knows she’s carrying my children, it will only burden him more.”
He paused. Zhe Yan finally asked he had been holding back for weeks. “Mo Yuan, are you sure Xiao Wu is pregnant with your children?”
“I’m sure. She wasn’t involved with Ye Hua like you’re thinking. Their relationship was pretense. My fiancée is a respectable woman. She wouldn’t behave promiscuously or do anything to disgrace herself, me, or her Clan.” Mo Yuan answered confidently. He kissed Xiao Wu’s forehead lovingly and stood up to face Zhe Yan.
Mo Yuan’s calm demeanor was replaced by genuine sadness as he spoke. He looked older as he announced, “I have to go to Nine Heavens this morning. Sujin has completely changed her statement. She now says that Heavenly Lord and Ye Hua were involved in SuSu’s blinding death, and Shì Qī’s kidnapping. The situation is getting worse than I expected. It might be best for her to remain unaware. Hearing such things would devastate her.”
“Mo Yuan, what if Ye Hua is guilty? What will you do? The Fox Clan said they would seek the same sentence he suggested for SuSu. I understand it was he who came up with the terms for her punishment. It was two years of lightning punishment and the removal of her eyes…”
Mo Yuan abruptly raised his palm in the air to stop Zhe Yan from saying another word and spoke with his composed demeanor. “The Fox Clan are highly sensitive now, because of Bai Qian’s precarious and uncertain medical conditions.”
“Their child is in a coma after being savagely wounded. They have every reason to feel hostile, but they too will come around. Bai Zhi and his people are not a primitive, barbaric or cruel family to want such despicable actions. Let’s pray Sujin is lying and twisting the truth. I’ll be back later tonight.”
Zhe Yan watched his brother, Mo Yuan, leave and couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. Even though he was the master of hiding emotions, thoughts and concerns, he had the heavy, burdensome weight of the world on his broad shoulders.
